BREEDING FRENCH BULLDOGS

The 10-Step Emotional Rollercoaster of a Litter of Puppies

By Kathy Dannel Vitcak | Enjoy this light-hearted overview of the feelings invoked by of a litter of puppies.

  • First Step – Hopes & Dreams as the breeding is planned
  • Second Step – Hopes & Dreams morphs into Anticipation as the Pregnancy is confirmed and the due date nears
  • Third Step – Relief when puppies arrive
  • Fourth Step – Guarded Optimism that each puppy survives and thrives
  • Fifth Step – Refined Optimism that the litter produces a nice mix of show and pet puppies. Of course, healthy pet or show puppies are all that matters, but it is nice if you were hoping for a show puppy
  • Sixth Step – More Guarded Optimism as puppies mature. Are bites right? Is movement correct?
  • Seventh Step – Knackered Exhaustion as puppies reach maximum poop output and Chewy is out of puppy pads.
  • Eight Step – Excitement/Anticipation/Touch of Terror – Time to contact those lucky folks who are on the Puppy List and start the Matchmaking process. (The Touch of Terror is inevitable, as we as breeders match puppy personalities with people personalities.)
  • Ninth Step – Joy/Sadness as all matchmaking decisions are made. You send the puppies to their new homes knowing they will enchant and enrich the lives of those lucky people. There may be tears as they drive away.
  • Ten Steps – Excitement as the next breeding is planned
